Mdm. Ngai Chua Jai, Lily (1926-2018)
Mr. Tung Chao-Yu and Ms. Ngai Chue Jai Lily, married for 70 years, were united by a lifelong commitment to benevolence and mutual support. Together, they established the “Tung Chao-Yu & Ngai Chue Jai Lily Education Foundation,” dedicated to developing university students in Hong Kong into societal keystones by instilling in them a dedication to the local community and an appreciation for the essence of Chinese culture. Mr. Tung, the younger sibling of the esteemed shipping magnate Mr. Tung Hao Yun (1912-1982), continued his family’s fervent commitment to public welfare, with a particular focus on the educational advancement of Hong Kong. After junior high, Mr. Tung Chao-Yu embarked on a career in global shipping. He spearheaded the establishment of the Southeast Asian maritime trade for the Tung Group, and was Managing Director for Hong Kong Export Line. He later founded his own company, specializing in liquefied petroleum gas, and became the first in Hong Kong to own an autonomous fleet of LPG tankers.
In the spirit of their forebears—who cherished education and embraced generosity and innovation—Mr. Tung and Ms. Ngai have trailblazed a new frontier in maritime trade. Their legacy of perseverance and breakthroughs serves as a beacon, inspiring the next generation to boldly innovate and cultivate the spirit of entrepreneurship. Through this scholarship, they seek to empower Hong Kong’s distinguished youth, providing them with the tools of knowledge and insight to confidently navigate and pioneer uncharted territories. As such, they instituted the “Tung & Ngai Scholarship.” This initiative offers comprehensive financial support to local university scholars, encompassing both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Through varied academic and cultural programs, overseas exchange opportunities, and internships, the scholarship aims to enhance their professional acumen and cultural sophistication. Additionally, the scholarship program incorporates an innovative Endeavor Support Fund. This fund is intended to promote an ethos of research and execution, with the objective of developing leaders who are not only academically accomplished but also demonstrate a profound commitment to community service. By providing scholarships and expert mentorship, the foundation is dedicated to fostering individuals who harbor a profound affection for Hong Kong and who are motivated to contribute to society and the nation.
