Our Founders: A Legacy of Vision and Benevolence
Tung Chao-Yu (1924–2020) & Ngai Chue Jai Lily (1926–2018)
United by a marriage spanning seventy years and a shared lifelong commitment to benevolence, Mr. TUNG Chao-Yu (董兆裕) and Mdm. NGAI Chue-Jai Lily (董艾祖潔) established the Foundation with a singular vision: to nurture Hong Kong’s youth into the keystones of society.
A Pioneer of the Seas
Mr. TUNG Chao-Yu was a defining figure in the golden era of global shipping. As the younger brother of the esteemed shipping magnate Mr. TUNG Chao-Yung (董浩雲), Mr. TUNG Chao-Yu carried the family’s torch of industry and public service with distinction.
His career was marked by a spirit of bold innovation. After spearheading the Tung Group’s expansion into Southeast Asian maritime trade and serving as Managing Director for Hong Kong Export Line, Mr. Tung charted his own course. He founded a company specialising in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and became the first in Hong Kong to own and operate an autonomous fleet of LPG tankers. His professional life was a testament to the power of perseverance and the courage to break new ground.
Navigating the Future
In the spirit of their forebears—who cherished education as deeply as they embraced innovation—Mr. TUNG and Mdm. NGAI sought to trailblaze a new frontier: the cultivation of human talent.
They believed that just as a ship requires a steady hand to navigate the ocean, the future of Hong Kong requires leaders equipped with knowledge, cultural confidence, and a global perspective. The Tung & Ngai Scholarship is their enduring gift to the next generation.
Through comprehensive financial support, immersive cultural exchanges, and the innovative Endeavour Support Fund, the founders aimed to empower youth to move beyond the classroom. Their goal was to foster leaders who are not only academically accomplished but possess the “endeavouring spirit” to explore uncharted territories—transforming ideas into execution and serving the nation with a profound sense of duty and affection.
